The Song of Songs - The Honeybee in the Garden
Illustrated Manuscript pages by Debra Band
February 1 – May 6, 2007

One of the shortest books of the Bible, the Song of Songs has provided generations of readers with some of the most passionate and lasting love poetry in history. In The Song of Songs: The Honeybee in the Garden, Band presented her own unique devotional body of work expressing sensual yearning, the beauty of nature and the land, and an allegorical interpretation of the relationship between bride (the people of Israel) and the groom (God). She employed parchment, fine calligraphy, color and precious metal leaf to create her own illuminated manuscript pages illustrating the Bible’s love song. The illuminations, drawn upon classic rabbinic texts and modern scholarship, created a new visual midrash based on the Song of Songs’ timeless poetry.
